New Technology For Old Historians

A 91 year old volunteer museum curator is one of 13 people to receive computer training at one of Llangollen's top tourist attractions. Proving that you are never too old to master new technology, Tom Clutton from Llangollen and the others will learn how to access Llangollen museum's new computerised displays and administrative systems.

The training, starting on Tuesday 17th May, will be provided by PriceMaurice Limited and is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is designed to improve the museum's services to visitors.

For some curators it will be the first time they have ever used a computer and will be an opportunity to learn new skills essential in the twenty-first century. Among the topics covered will be how to design and create banners for the museum's displays, how to help visitors use the new touch-screen computers and how to access the museum's archive system. For some, the training will begin with basic computer skills such as how to turn them on and off, using a mouse and creating documents.

The Managing Director of PriceMaurice Limited, Matt Price, says, "We're very happy to be helping the museum keep up with twenty-first century demands and pressures by training their curators. I'm very confident that our trainers will have no problem teaching all the curators the necessary skills, whatever their age and previous computer experience."

Tom Clutton, a former industrial chemist says, "I bought a laptop six months ago and use it to do all my banking. At 91 years old, I'm not a complete computer novice but there's definitely room for improvement!"

Llangollen Museum opened in 2002 and receives more than 32,000 visitors a year. Last year it moved to a more prominent location, just off the main shopping street in Llangollen. It is home to artefacts and displays on local heritage.

The Museum's Manager, David Crane says, "Having all our staff computer literate will allow us to provide better services to our visitors and improve the general running of the museum. We're very pleased to be able to offer computer training to our volunteer staff and hope it will be useful to them in other areas of their life."

PriceMaurice Limited, a computer training and web development company in Llangollen, has tailor-made the training especially for the museum. For other information about training courses please call PriceMaurice Limited on 01978 861181 / 0845 644 2393.
